The Story of Disco
Have you ever been touched by a smile? Felt the burst of energy that comes directly into your heart and makes you feel better? A good smile can make you smile too!
I think smiles are one of our superpowers, and in a world that often feels difficult and disconnected, even a stranger’s smile can make us feel better, sometimes even wonderful.
Like the light from a disco ball, I like to think of a smile as radiating outwards, creating thousands of rays of light that touch everyone around you. As the light of a smile reaches each of us, almost by magic, there is a good chance that we will be inspired to smile too.
My wife Sarah was known for her smile, and its ethereal ability to light up a room. Her smile made the people around her comfortable, and created joy out of thin air.
Sarah's sickness did not stop her from smiling, and it was impossible not to be wrapped in her love. I find that even today, when I remember Sarah’s smile, it brings me incredible joy.
I designed this ring, my Disco Bonbon, to remind myself of how powerful a smile can be, and hopefully make you smile too.
My Favorite Parts of this Ring
This design is a true celebration of stones and metals.
It’s rare to find reverse set stones matched with each of the four main precious metals, and like perfect diamonds, each array of stones captures the light around us and radiates it forth.
The simplicity of the pairings does not limit their lessons. Each combination unlocks a deep secret of jewelry, and as I explore each one, I learn a bit more about my art.
You might think I am completely irreverent for turning each of the stones upside down and reverse-setting them for this design, but in the process, I was forced to create a new geometry to support the unfamiliar reflections of these typically hidden facets, which I believe led me to a complete design that feels perfectly classical.
I must confess, I am in love with my Bonbon design. Small enough for every day, but significant enough to have recognizable power, every time I hold a Bonbon in my hand, I feel its magic, and I can’t help but smile.
I chose to name this collection after my favorite chocolate confection, the bonbon, because I believe there is a special magic in exploring a box of exquisite chocolates. With each piece, there is the potential to find yourself in its unique flavor and reveal a special joy. My hope is that I can create Bonbons as diverse as your strengths, and that your Bonbon captures a little magic for you.
